There are several options to consider when purchasing a new or used bucket truck or boom truck for your business. Bucket trucks typically fit into 3 height categories: less than 50 feet, 50-59 feet and over 60 feet. Determine the working height of your job scope and purchase one within those parameters. Working height is the common term for the boom or platform height and is the highest point at which a worker can safely work.

Buckets come with their own model variations such as single-man or two-man baskets, insulated and non-insulated. Insulated buckets shield the passenger from electrical shock by either the bucket or liner construction being non-conductive or having insulated parts in the boom. If your work does not entail coming in contact with electrical lines, this can play into the consideration of the insulated versus non-insulated buckets.

When searching for new and used bucket trucks, there are also overcenter and non-overcenter designs. Overcenter bucket trucks have the lift centered in the middle of the vehicle and articulated means that the truck has a jointed boom as opposed to a single solid boom construction. This allows the bucket to extend its side reach which can be useful for many job applications. Non-overcenter trucks do not allow for the bucket to move beyond the center of the truck and can restrict reach but, if height is the focus, then this is not an issue.
